No Mud, No Lotus

"No mud, no lotus" means that beauty, happiness, and spiritual growth cannot exist without first experiencing suffering, difficulty, and struggle.

The phrase was popularized by the Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, who wrote a book on the concept titled No Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering.

Contemplation

When we pause long enough to behold light resting upon stone and leaf, the mind naturally settles into its original calm.
